Where we Work

Village Health Works operates in one of the rural areas of Burundi, 60 miles southwest of the capital city of Bujumbura. Our patients come from all over the country and also neighboring Tanzania and the DRC. Our catchment area in southern Burundi serves a population of approximately 200,000 mostly from the provinces of Rumonge, Makamba, Bururi.

Our campus is nestled amongst lush mountains and overlooks Lake Tanganyika, one of the oldest and largest lakes in the world. We strive to provide Burundians with a place of calm and healing in a country that has endured many years of turmoil.

Burundi is a small country in the heart of the Great Lakes Region of East Africa. The majority of the population lives in rural areas and relies on subsistence farming to survive. Due to a prolonged civil war between 1993 and 2006, Burundi has experienced very slow development and is plagued by poor health outcomes, a failing education system, and weak infrastructure.
