Vision
To create a patient-centered team dedicated to providing quality health care for the people we serve. The vision of Village Health Works is based on the principle that all people, including the most oppressed and impoverished, are entitled to the highest standards of health care in their pursuit of happy and productive lives.
Two closely related ideas form the basis of our vision: community empowerment and community partnership in VHW projects. Through education and practical training, community members are empowered not only to participate in VHW projects but also to organize and manage them.
We believe integrating community members at every phase of VHW projects is crucial to creating the lasting partnership that is needed for people to improve their health and lives.
Mission
To provide compassionate, culturally sensitive and excellent quality care to our patients in a safe and dignified environment.
Working with communities suffering from socio-economic and health deprivation, we are creating and strengthening health care facilities and services, securing clean water and safe food, and providing health education and economic opportunity. We began by opening a health center in Kigutu, whose people have had almost no access to the most basic health care. With support from Partners In Health (PIH), VHW continues to recruit, train, and employ local health professionals.
In addition to collaborating closely with community members, we work in partnership with the Burundi Ministries of Health and HIV/AIDS as well as other private and intergovernmental organizations who share our mission.
