The Kigutu Health Center

Village Health Works has completed construction of outpatient facilities, and has commenced providing clinical services. In the initial phase, clinical activities are focused on primary care, particularly pediatrics and women's health. Comprehensive services for HIV/AIDS, malaria, TB prevention and care, and a nutritional support program are also being rolled out. VHW employs a rights-based approach to health, providing care and medical treatment to all comers, regardless of the ability to pay. This is a central tenet of the VHW operational mission.

Women's Health Programs

Village Health Works Women's Health Programs include Obstetrics and Gynecology services, family planning, prenatal care, prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV, and treatment of sexually transmitted infections.

Pediatric Program

Burundi has a child mortality rate of 20%, which is largely due to preventable and treatable diseases such as malaria, measles, pneumonia and diarrheal disesae. Village Health Works will screen for and treat these diseases, as well as work to provide full immunization for the children of Kigutu.

Malaria Initiative

VHW places a large emphasis on the treatment and prevention of malaria in Kigutu, with particular focus among high-risk groups which include pregnant women and children. Furthermore, environmental control of mosquito populations is being implemented following contruction of medical facilities.

Infrastructure

The Kigutu villagers have spent months working intensely on the infrastructure for the Clinic. They have graded 6km of road from Mugara to Kigutu, plus a driveway to the site of the clinic.

Architecture and Building Construction

The construction of the outpatient facility is complete and functional. A master plan for the entire clinic, inpatient facility, residential and administrative buildings, is being developed. Work continues apace on site construction and infrastructure.
