Forty-three year old Justine Harokorimana has given birth 11 times, but only seven of her children are alive today. On February 2nd 2015, she gave birth to her youngest daughter, Generose Nibitanga. Generose appeared healthy until Justine noticed a gradual increase of her baby's head. Two months later, Generose became very weak and she could not breathe well, and wouldn't consume even when breastfed.
One night, Justine took her daughter to a local health center in her neighborhood where she received an injection, which later made her whole body start swelling, especially her head. Worried, Justine and Generose left the health center and ran to Rumonge Hospital where she had an x-ray but the results were inconclusive and doctors were unable to make a clear diagnosis of what Generose was suffering from.
Two weeks later, they came to the Sharon McKenna Community Health Center in Kigutu where Generose was diagnosed with hydrocephalus disease. She spent a week at VHW as an inpatient before her transfer to the Military Hospital in Bujumbura where she underwent a successful surgery.
