Community Health Worker Power!

“Thank you for empowering me to help my neighbors” – Ruth Niyonkuru, VHW Community Health Worker

Empowering Community Health Workers by providing knowledge and giving them the opportunity to help their neighbors is part of the Village Health Works mission in Burundi. "We are blessed to have VHW in our area. Before joining VHW, my family was suffering from many problems that we didn't know how to solve. For instance, my husband used to get sick, he was suffering from hypertension, and I never knew what to cook for him really. When I joined VHW as a VHW community health worker in 2010, I received training in communicable and chronic diseases. They opened my mind and taught me how to help my husband. Now I am confident enough to help him and my neighbors, who also call upon me when they have health issues! I can give advice or send them to the clinic if need be. I feel like my life has more meaning now. May God bless VHW" - Ruth.
