On Feb 9th, the first ever Kigutu Fashion Show was put on with great success. Over 200 people were in attendance, and both participants and the audience had a wonderful time. The event was even covered by the national television station of Burundi!
Last week was a busy one for the Economic Development team. The women's co-operatives spent the week preparing for the fashion show and working to fulfill an order worth 1,500 USD.
Though they have only been training since January, the sewing co-op put on a stunning display showcasing beautiful and colorful clothing. With the help of our volunteer Anna, they demonstrated that they are very fast learners.
The bakery co-op also provided bread and other treats for the event and nearly sold out - they made nearly 1,000 loaves! Similarly, the agricultural co-op members that attended sold all of their produce.
Rounding out the event, our new volunteer Eran cooked a nutritious, delightful meal that fed nearly all of the 200 guests.
The Economic Development team also welcomes Joanna, who has arrived in Kigutu to train the soap co-op. Thus far the women have made an oatmeal and honey soap as well as a honey and passion fruit soap.
This first Kigutu Fashion Show was a great success, and the Economic Development team is excited about future projects.
