Burundi is a small country in the heart of the Great Lakes Region of East Africa. The majority of the population lives in rural areas and relies on subsistence farming to survive. Due to a prolonged civil war between 1993 and 2006, Burundi has experienced very slow development and is plagued by poor health outcomes, a failing education system and weak infrastructure.
